Lavalan – The Sustainable Wool Insulation

Ruth Kelly

We like to talk about Wool at SSACHS.

Wool is an amazing, highly technical, natural fiber that provides superior breathability and thermoregulating properties regardless of activity levels or altering weather conditions. In addition to its amazing thermoregulating properties, wool is capable of neutralizing odors for a longer use without unnecessary wash cycles.

These natural properties makes wool a great candidate for insulation, and a natural alternative to synthetic fiberfill.

Wool Insulation’s Functional Benefits

LAVALAN® FIBER FILL

Lavalan® is a highly functional fiber fill solely made in Germany from natural and renewable raw materials, wool and corn. Lavalan® insulation combines the unique properties of European virgin wool with the easy-care features of corn-based polylactic acid (PLA) fibers.

All Lavalan® products pass through a thermal bonding process during manufacturing. The PLA connects the wool fibers on countless spots and creates a long-lasting, machine- washable, robust but at the same time soft and comfortable fiberfill.

COMPANY

Lavalan® is manufactured in Germany by Baur Vliesstoffe GmbH.

Baur Vliesstoffe GmbH was founded in 1913 and has more than 100 years of experience in wool washing, 50 years in wool fiber processing and more than 15 years in washable wool products.

In 2012 the company successfully expanded into the lifestyle, outdoor and fashion apparel markets. The company offers continuous review, improvements and innovations. They are dedicated to the regional sourcing of wool fiber underlined by a ‘zero-waste’ philosophy.

WOOL SOURCING

Lavalan® wool is sourced exclusively from European sheep. The sheep graze in both the idyllic surroundings of the Austrian and Swiss Alps where they are kept in natural conditions as well as pastures in Norway and Sweden.

WOOL TRACING

The independent Swiss company Ego Trace certifies the Lavalan® supply chain, to prove the origin of the wool from sheep to the finished product – true to the motto “from sheep to shop”. This allows critical consumers to track the wool’s way back to the collection point.

ANIMAL WELFARE

The European Union has rigorous standards for animal welfare. Legislation sets strict rules and ensures that:

  • sheep always have access to clean water and adequate nutrition
  • sheep are allowed to display their natural behaviors
  • sheep have adequate shade and shelter available at all times
  • sheep are protected from unnecessary stress, disease and pain; all wool is mulesed free; happy sheep always.

LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT

At the end of its lifecycle Lavalan® fiber fill does not contribute to landfill as the fiber is both recyclable and biodegradable.
